Phyllis Tang
Born and raised in Vancouver, Phyllis pursued graduate studies in Ethnomusicology at UBC and Toronto, and Upper-Level Non-Profit Financial Management, Accounting, & International Finance courses in Richmond. Aside from being a piano & music theory instructor for over 24 years and a Community Outreach & Public Relations Specialist, she has worked on over 18 political campaigns, was a 2018 Vancouver City Council Candidate, the winner of the 2015 & 2016 Golden Key International Honour Society’s Advisor Professional Development Scholarship, and the recipient of the York University Graduate Scholarship for Academic Excellence. As a Richmond resident, Phyllis is proud to be the Treasurer of the Rotaract Club of Richmond, a Director of the Advance Richmond Community Association, and the Treasurer of the Marpole Neighbourhood House. Formerly, Phyllis worked for the board of the Sunset Community Centre Association, was the Administrative Officer of the Sun-Yat Sen Garden Society of Vancouver, the former Director of Outreach for Vancouver South, and the 2024 Campaign Director for Richmond-Queensborough in the recent provincial election, a role which allowed her to glean a comprehensive understanding of what our community really needs.
In the past, Phyllis also served as a Constituency Assistant for a Richmond-Queensborough MLA, an Exam Invigilator for UBC Access & Diversity and the UBC Sauder School of Business, and hopes to leverage her community relations to further engage Richmond parents, students, and the entire community in additional capacities, including through music education, financial literacy applications, physical activity, mental health and substance use awareness initiatives, green space sustainability projects, anti-bullying campaigns, and more. She is fluent in spoken and written English, Mandarin Chinese, and Cantonese.
